FootballThe annual Durand Cup tournament shall commence from September 2nd onwards and the finals are likely to be played on the 20th of the month, according to the organisers.

The Indian Armed Forces, who are responsible for keeping the age old tournament alive, stated that the 122nd edition of Durand Cup would begin after the Nehru Cup in Delhi.

Speaking to Goal.com, Major SS Mann said, “The qualifying rounds shall start from September 2nd, while the main tournament, as in the quarterfinal league shall begin from the 10th. The finals will be on September 20th.”

The organisers have written to several clubs across the nation to send in their details and confirm their participation in the tournament.

For those unaware, Durand Cup is one of the oldest  football tournaments and, is also considered the third oldest in the world, after the English and Scottish FA Cups.

Mahindra United are the title holders after they beat Churchill Brothers 3-2 thanks to an extra time strike by Thoi Singh.

History:

The Durand Football Tournament was started by Mortimer Durand at Simla, India, in 1888.The initial matches were played in Dagshai. In 1940 the venue was shifted to New Delhi.

Since India’s independence, 1947, Mohun Bagan (16x) and East Bengal (16x) have split 32 cup victories between them. After the eclipse of the high profile teams from Hyderabad, the Durand Cup, with rare exceptions since 1970, has been won mostly by teams from Kolkata (Mohun Bagan and East Bengal) or Punjab (Border Security Force & JCT Mills). In 1997 FC Kochin from the south won, in 1998 and 2002 for the first time a team from Mumbai with Mahindra United won the title twice, while in 1999 and 2003 Goan side Salgaocar won the trophy twice but the new Millennium’s first title was once again won by Mohun Bagan. In 2005 Sporting Clube de Goa missed the title by a whisker when Army XI produced an upset to win. But in 2006 it was won by Goa’s Dempo S.C., who beat JCT 2-0 in the finals.

Royal Scots Fusiliers won the inaugural Durand cup in 1888 at Simla, who defeated Highland Light Infantry with score 2-1.
