Kerala, GNDU in last four
Coimbatore: Kerala University and Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) scored hard-fought wins and entered the semifinals of the all-India inter-varsity football tournament for men at the Bharathiar varsity grounds here on Wednesday.
After being locked 1-1 at the end of the regulation period, Kerala pulled off a surprise 5-4 win, via tie-breaker, over favourite Mizoram University. GNDU was up in a similar position against Mumbai. But, the former held its nerves to upstage the latter 5-4 via tie-breaker.
The results (quarterfinals): Punjabi 4 (Harpreet Singh 49, 90, Karampreet Singh 56, Sushil Kumar 62) bt Kannur 0; GNDU (Amritsar) 0 bt Mumbai 0 (5-4 via tie-breaker); Punjab 5 (Jashanpreet Singh 11, Varinder Singh 27, Balgagandeep Singh 53, Hardeep Singh 65, Prabdeep Singh 83) bt Barakatullah 2 (Mohd. Ikram 44, 86); Kerala 1 (Vikash Sukumaran 47) bt Mizoram 1 (Lalrammwia 5) (5-4 via tie-breaker).
