Thrissur shines on Day 1 of State Under-14 Football Championship

Kerala State Sub Junior (under-14) Football Championship 2011 kicked off at the 122 Infantry Battalion Ground, Kannur on Tuesday. On the first round of knock out matches held on the opening day, Thrissur, Kasargod and Idukki registered wins and a winning start to the 2011 edition of the tournament competed by all 14 districts of the state.

Thrissur came out worthy winners against Kollam in the inaugural match of the tournament, thanks to five goals scored by forward Jithin which helped them to an 8-0 win. Meanwhile, Idukki had to take the game into the extra time to beat Wayanad 3-1.

It was a tight encounter between Kottayam and Kasargod as there was no clear winner after the regulation time and extra time with both teams playing out a 1-1 draw. But, it was Kasargod that kept their composure in the penalty shoot outs to win the match 4-1 and progress.

The tournament organised by the Cannanore District Football Assocition (CDFA) was inaugurated by Subedar Major H Vijayan of the Territorial Army. On the second day, hosts Kannur will face Pathanamthitta (04:00 PM), Ernakulam play Palakkad (02:30 PM) and Allapuzha take on Malappuram (07:00 PM).
