Jibin Devassy: From Kerala to Munich

Jibin Devassy from Thrissur district of Kerala are among five talented footballers who will fly to Munich in Germany to represent India at the international Allianz Junior Football Camp held in association with FC Bayern Munich in August 2012. Jibin Devassy (Kerala), Akshay Sharma (Chandigarh), Lalremruata (Aizwal), Akash Mandal (Kolkata) and Gobinda Kar (Burdwan) are the boys who have been selected amongst the 135 finalists in the final phase of the nationwide talent hunt which concluded at Pune on Sunday.

In the matches held at the Shivajinagar Police Ground, Pune, seven teams representing seven regions namely Chandigarh Warriors, Delhi Dribblers, Kerala Komets, Pune Phantoms, Hyderabad Havocs, Bangalore Burners and Mumbai Movers went head to head. Three promising players from each team were awarded cash prizes. Three promising players selected from the Kerala team were Rahul M (Rs. 50000), Afdal VK (Rs. 25000) and Lazim Ali (Rs. 15000).

Kerala team also made it into the finals of the tournament eventually losing out to Chandigrah in the finals by a score line of 1-0. Jibin Devassy was awarded the man of the tournament award.

The winners in Pune were selected on the basis of their football skills by an eminent panel of judges comprising of Brazilian midfielder Roberto Mendes Silva from Churchill Brothers SC and Japanese midfielder of Indian origin Arata Izumi of Pune FC. The winners were felicitated by Subrat Mohanty (Head of Sales, Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance), Rituraj Bhattacharjee (Head – Market Management, Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance) and the rest of the jury.

Every year, Bajaj Allianz sends talented Indian kids for a football training camp at the Allianz Arena in Munich, where 14-16 year olds from all over the world are trained by the coaches and players of FC Bayern Munich. The Indian leg of the Junior Football Camp travels to over 42 cities, conducting a series of selections and playoffs to judge the most deserving candidates to go to Munich.

This was the third season of the junior camp held in India by Bajaj Allianz. In the first season of the tournament, another Keralite Abu Thahir was among the Indians selected for the 2010 international camp.
