PT Somy

somyAs most of the `Mallu’ football fans are concentrating on Kerala players in I League, it must also be acknowledged that we have a second division league and a lot of Kerala players are doing their best to show their team a way to the first division. Football Kerala, through this article, is trying to highlight one such Kerala player in the club ONGC FC.

Somy PT, a native of Thrissur, is playing for Mumbai-based ONGC FC in the defensive midfield position. With his agility and talent, he has proved to be one of the best for the team in the current position and may be for the national team in the future.

Starting his career at Keltron FC in 2003, the 23-year-old has experience in playing for four professional clubs in last seven years. His affection towards the game started from childhood and with his superb performance for his college team, he was selected to Keltron FC. While playing for Keltron, he had a more attacking role. Later, when he was picked by then Viva Kerala coach Chathunni found his strength in the defensive play also.

Playing one year in Viva gave him more exposure and training. This boosted his career and was also reflected in his game. He teamed up with Denson, present Chirag United captain, in the midfield and battled for the team’s momentum in the season. After completing one year in Viva, he was enlisted by clubs outside Kerala as a target of transfer. Churchill Brothers won the transfer and grabbed his skills from Viva Kerala in 2005.

Two years he served for Churchill Brothers and he was loaned to Mohammedan Sporting Club in Kolkata. But his stint and Mohammedan did not last for long. He served for Mohammedan Sporting club for only six months and after that he came back to his home team, Viva Kerala, looking for a fresh start.

He could not resist the call from his home team as the club was the place where he was groomed. After a small period of enjoyment with his former team mates, he said adieu to the club, which shaped him.

He then joined an emerging club ONGC FC from there. The need for a job and good salary made him to take the decision. He says that he will surely come back when good facilities and monetary benefits are given. “It is my dream to play in Kerala. The conditions there must develop. Here the training facilities are good and we have a ground to practise daily,” he said.

Now, he is waiting for his team to set properly as there are several new players in the team. With five other Malayali players in the team, Lalu K V, Saleel C S, Ganesh M C, Kenistan C, and an ex-viva player, the much-hyped Baba Thunde, he is confident in winning the second division and playing in I League soon. “We are putting in our best to win the games in the second division and qualify for the I league’s next season,” he said. To draw his career best, he is aiming at the second league matches and Mumbai League matches.
