In an ONGC I-League 2009-10 match played at Corporation Floodlit Stadium, Calciut, East Bengal overcame Viva Kerala by an early single goal from their captain Syed Rahim Nabi.
The match was less eventful apart from the goal and a few chances for Viva Kerala in both the halfs. Viva Kerala were without their captain MP Sakeer and Anish KP and East Bengal without their captain Bhaichung Bhutia and Renedy Singh.
East Bengal went one up in the 11th minute of the match when Subash Singh set up East Bengal captain just outside the penalty box. Nabi who stormed in to the box put the ball into the net with a clinical finish.
Viva Kerala had large amount of possession throughout the match but they were not able to get the ball past the East Bengal goal keeper Abhijith Ghosh. Their new signing, Wisut Bunpeng was promising in the first half, but didn’t touch the ball much in the second half and was eventually substituted late in the half.
First half saw a lot of passing between Wisut Bunpeng and T Karma who forged Viva Kerala’s attacks in first half. Sirajudeen who was captaining the team instead of MP Sakeer had a lot of shots off target throughout the match and turned to be the pick of Viva players.
Patrick Sisupalan had a shot on target in the 26th minute, but was cleared off the line by East Bengal defence. Wisut’s volley was saved with a diving effort by the East Bengal custodian in the 40th minute.
East Bengal trios - Subash Singh, Abel Hammond and Yusif Yakubu – were impressive in the attacks and created a lot of movements inside the Viva half. In the 41st minute, East Bengal almost doubled their lead by a header from Subash Singh, but the effort turned down into a corner by Charles Dzisah.
In the 80th minute, Abel Hammond collected the ball in the midfield and stormed in to the penalty box, all on his own, but his marvellous effort was cleared by Mohammed Marsook before he could get a shot off the opportunity.
Reuben Senyo put the ball past the keeper into the net, but the referee judged the move as off side. In the last minutes of the regulation time, Viva’s Nigerian defender Belo Rasaq produced two long shots, but both missed the target by a distance.
Viva Kerala couldn’t find that crucial goal in the match and awarded the ‘Red and Gold’ army their first win in I-League 2009-10.
East Bengal’s Mehtab Hussain and Subash Singh received yellow cards in the match. Mehtab was cautioned for a foul on Wisut while Subash for a foul on Charles. The Kolkata side’s defender, Ugaokpara, was awarded the man of the match.

coach need to find a new goal keeper, the guy sucks.a weak shot from outside big dline, is a very easy save for any body, but viva goalie looks like helping east bengal to win. maybe it is a match fixing, india is good at and if not, why he let it pass him and coach, letting him play again and again. this is 3rd or maybe 4th time, suffering an easy and early goal. change the goalie if viva wants to win, i like the young players specailly in midfields.

Hmm interesting observation by Ram and it probably looks like an easy shot that went past the goalie...but take a look at video. The defenders let the goalie down...Naushad and Karma (in particular) left lots of space on the right in the Viva half and were completely coaxed by the EB attack. Nabi took the shot right in the face of five Viva players...so i think it is unfair to put the blame solely on the goalie.
Shahinlal Meloly is a decent goalie with a bright future. Viva's goalkeeping coach needs to groom him. He is undoubtedly talented but has a long way to go.
The first team has plenty of talent but the coaches need to do a lot of training in "defensive" and "offensive" tactics.
I think Karma should be dropped as he is partly to blame for the EB goal and also wasted a great chance when he was clearly through on goal.
It was a good finish by Nabi after a counter attack from EB. Why cant u credit the player for that finish.. had Viva make some finishing half this quality .. could have won by 3 goals atleast ...
Shahinlal is a young goalkeeper ..great talent and at 19yrs performing for a top division league takes some nerve. I think he is still too young to be No. 1 goalkeeper. Good future for the lad but Viva needs someone more experienced to guard the post. Dropping him from the squad is not good option as he is the best of the lot at the moment.
Viva needs to find a solution to their finishing problem and also a way not to concede in first 10 minutes.
All 4 matches they concede inside 10 minutes, and this changes the game.
Karma needs to be more confident going up. and should try to shoot when he has chances. This lad is working hard making chances getting into positions but giving away easily.
Jason, lets talk football, the goal is purly goalie fault, no doubt, nabi shoot way outside dline n viva defenders are all lined up on dline, i don't know why some are not marking the opponent players, which there should. i guess, defenders thought goalie could stop it and nabi didnt volley it, he just tabbed it(which viva's strikers are lacking, strikers should have a quick look at goal post before shooting..i can train them given a chance). now, jason, when u look at the video, the first think nashoud did mistake is, it is a long ball is in the air coming towards him, he should run to fight for the ball, instead, he let the opponent striker have time to settle. the guy dribbled him, look karma(good thing he covers all), he was running back and when he challenge the striker, noushad should have kept a little gap, then he would have the ball. and it will solve the problem, then the ball went to another WB player, viva defender have plenty time to manuviour, why nabi is open. the worst, goalie is out of position and maybe no reflex. karma, he looks young, i like his ball control and passing sense and the most speed, he need to be more confident and not to worry about mistake, the coach should groom him. about goalie, i am talking about that shot, people make mistake...and other early goal, he should be confident and control the defenders, rather i was one defender, an african screaming at him. he should shout at defenders for mistakes or ordering. the season is too young to worry, hope goalie play with more confident in next game.

Great analysis Ram. I agree with your observations except "fault of goalie". Now both of us have our views and its great to see you express your views so explicitly. Given all the above comments, what do you think is the root cause to all this misery? I'm sure both of us and many others like us will agree is...the lack of "grooming".
Sreedharan is not really a coach in the technical sense and neither is he a complete way.
Viva has got some great talents (most of them a bit raw and naive for the I-League!). These guys are completely disillusioned by the so-called-coaching-techniques of Sreedharan...which in any case is limited to fitness drills. The "coach" has created an atmosphere whereby, the players feel a bit insecure talking to the coach and the foreign brigade is deemed as untouchables.
The defence has to be organized and "communication" is the key...but Sreedharan's military regime does not encourage much communication. During training its "no talk...just run" and during matches its again "no talk...these are the players and play in this formation"...that's it! Sorry, forgot to mention the substitutions that he makes. This is typical of PE/Drill masters in schools that can not afford to have football coaches.
Coaches need to focus on positioning of players while making passes, connecting crosses, during dead-ball situations, etc. The Viva coaching team does not explain mistakes the way you have tried to...How do you expect the players to really improve if the only remark the coach makes is "oh that is not how it should be done" without actually showing/telling them how to do it right the next time?
I guess some topics are better when left untouched!!!

Jason, thanks for the compliment. i love soccer, i played it as striker and won golden boot in a tournament in india, through local. i scored an average 8 goals in 5 matches n deemed best striker, but those days are gone as i am in early 30 and doing business for survival. I am surprise that viva can taunt big names..churchill, mb, chrig and east bengal and what i can take positive is, viva have youthful, speedy and talented players, espeailly in midfields and that made differance. but compare to western soccer, india is lacking, not to mention viva. the touch game..saw a bit with karma, thai kid and PIO player, coach has to focus on it, it is always team game. the player have to open up for pass, not just running..the simple of all, the moving triangle set is not seen atall. i don't know the coach to comment on, but maybe all viva should watch some good west soccer game..say barca or chelsea and dissect it and repeat the play, i guess there is lot s to learn for midfields, not just viva, whole i-leageue.
