In the South Zone inter-university Football Championship held at the Bharatiyar University, Coimbatore, the two universities from Kerala battled each other in the semi final league where the Kerala University gained the upper hand.Kannur University ended up as runners-up.
In the Semi Final league matches, champions Kerala University defeated hosts Bharatiyar and the Hindustan University of Chennai while were held to a draw by fellow state men, Kannur University(1-1). The Kannur University finished their campaign behind leaders Kerala University with a win over Bharatiyar (6-0) and 2 draws against Kerala and Hindustan Universities (1-1).
Both Kerala and Kannur Universities qualified for the National inter-university Football Tournament after coming first and second in the south. The national tournament will begin at Coimbatore on January 2, 2010.
