The Indian women thrashed Sri Lanka 8-1 at Dhaka while the men’s team went down 0-1 to Afghanistan at Chittagong in the opening round of the football event of the 11th South Asian Games on Friday.
The women’s side, which led 2-0 at half-time through goals from Moirangthem and Sasmita in the ninth and 45th minutes, bulldozed the opposition in the latter half adding six more through Moirangthem (56th and 59th), Yumnam (51st), Naobi Chanu (82nd and 83rd) and Pinky Bompal (90th).
Sri Lanka found one consolation goal through Pushpa Ekanayaka (74th).
In the other match, Nepal defeated Bangladesh 1-0.
