Continuing on their winning run, JCT Phagwara stunned last year's runners up Mcdowell's Mohun Bagan 2-1 on their home turf in the second round ONGC I League match at Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata.
Having beaten new comers Shillong Lajong FC 5-1 in their last match, JCT today scored through their last match's hattrick hero Baljit Singh Sahni (56th min) and Nigerian recruit Penn Orji (46th min).
Miseries compounded for Mcdowell's Mohun Bagan already rattled by their first round loss to Chirag United SC as the green and maroon brigade could only score through Branco Cardozo (84th).
The match once again reduced Mcdowell's Mohun Bagan to 10 players after their stand-in captain Deepak Mondal picked two yellow cards, with his second coming in the 10 minutes stoppage time.
After Mondal received his second yellow, Mohun Bagan players became violent and tried to manhandling the referee in what turned out to be an ugly incident.
In total, the match saw a total of six single yellow cards besides two double yellow to Deepak resulting in a red card.
JCT drew first blood through Penn who capitalised on a clearance from Bagan defender Mashangva Zenith to see the ball lob into the net as the opponents custodian Shilton Paul did not have any chance.
Baljit continued his good show in the tournament as with a solitary effort he surged into box with Bagan's Rakesh Masih failing to tackle as the hattrick hero scored past Shilton who dived to his right without any success.
Branco fired in from 25 yards to see his long shot going into the net as Mohun Bagan reduced the margin in the 84th minute.
Mohun Bagan heavily missed their Brazilian striker Jose Barreto and as Branco Cardozo and Edeh Chidi struggled to score.
There was more setback for Bagan as their defender N Mohanraj had to be hospitalised after injury in an collision, in an incident that stopped play about five minutes in the 64th minute of play.
Minutes later, JCT's Sakatar Singh and Zenith sustained injuries in the head injuries after an aerial battle.
