Mexico 1986 would be famously remembered for the quarter-final match between England and Argentina in which Maradona scored a goal which is considered to be one of the best in the history of football in which he cut around Beardsley and away from Reid, took the ball past Hodge, Fenwick, Samson, Butcher and Stevens and slotted home past Shilton what is considered the best goal in World Cup history. He also scored the infamous “Hand of God” goal in the same match.
Image not recoveredItaly 1990 was a defender’s World Cup. The teams that defended well went through and the teams that played attacking football lost out. It was also a low scoring World Cup. The final was also a dull affair with a penalty goal being the solitary goal of the match. More famously remembered for the heroics of Roger Milla of Cameroon in the opening rounds more than anything else, it was also the World Cup that Franz Beckenbauer took home as manager after winning one as a player in his playing days
USA 1994 was Brazil’s all the way. Brazil were favourites right from the start. Dunga in the midfield was brilliant and Romario and Bebeto were instant favourites around the world. Celebrating new born babies with a swing of cupped arms became a trend after this World Cup when Bebeto celebrated in this style on scoring on the day of the birth of his child.
