Mar Thoma College, with six Kerala State players in its ranks, retained the Mahatma Gandhi University inter-collegiate women’s football title rather comfortably at its home ground at Thiruvalla last week.
In fact, the championship which was supposed to be a two-day affair, turned out to be one-day event after Mar Thoma gave a 9-0 drubbing to Alphonsa College (Pala) in its opening game.
“When the UC girls knew they were sure of getting the runners-up position after the early matches, they were not keen on playing us. We got a walk-over,” said Reginold Varghese, the Head of Mar Thoma College’s Physical Education Department.
Mar Thoma’s State player Nejumunnisa fired in four goals in the host’s lone game, while Dhanya scored two.
Mar Thoma topped the four-team league event with nine points, while UC finished runner-up with six.
