Gokulam head into the competition with a squad featuring six foreign players alongside a strong group of Kerala players, while the team is also under the guidance of a new head coach Carlos Eduardo Parreira for the 2026–27 season. The tournament will be the first competitive outing for the new-look squad and an opportunity to put the work from pre-season into action.

The Malabarians will begin their campaign against Thunderbolt United on Tuesday, October 6 at 2:30 PM at Paljor Stadium.

The Governor’s Gold Cup has a long-standing place in Indian football history. First held in 1979, the tournament has brought several prominent Indian and international clubs to Sikkim over the years. The competition is organised by the Sikkim Football Association, with Paljor Stadium in Gangtok serving as its traditional venue.

Gokulam also have recent history in the competition. In the 2024 edition, the club reached the semi-finals after defeating Sikkim Police 4–3 in the pre-quarterfinal and Transport United 2–1 in the quarter-final. The Malabarians then faced NorthEast United FC in the semi-final, where they were defeated 2–0. NorthEast United went on to win the tournament on penalties against Gangtok Himalayan in the final.

The 2026 edition features several notable clubs, including NorthEast United FC, Shillong Lajong FC and Gokulam, alongside teams from Sikkim and elsewhere.

For Gokulam, the Governor’s Gold Cup represents the first competitive test of the new season. With a new coaching setup, a refreshed squad and the 2026–27 league campaign approaching, the tournament will provide valuable match experience and an opportunity to continue building towards the season ahead.
