The process of renovation of the EMS Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode which includes the construction of a new grandstand will begin in September 2011, informed AK Premajam, Mayor of Kozhikode Corporation. The Mayor also informed that the construction, as part of the National Games 2012, will be over in less than a year.
The new grandstand will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 18 crores. The Corporation of Kozhikode will pay 45% of the expense, while the rest of the money will be taken from Government funds for the National Games 2012 Organizing Committee.
The grandstand, designed by RK Ramesh, coming up at the EMS Stadium will have state-of-the-art facilities including VVIP lounge with 200 seating, VIP lounge, dressing rooms for players and media centre.
The stadium which was constructed in 1977 saw renovations in 2005 when it was reopened for State Bank of Travancore's (SBT) National Football League (NFL) matches. The stadium was also home of Viva Kerala FC in their 2009-10 I-League campaign.
